Aliento (Breath) comes from the Vulgar Latin alenitus, a variation of anhelitus, which refers to exhalation, respiration, and the act of taking in and letting go of air. Its root, anhelare, denotes strenuous breathing—an effort to hold air within the body—yet with a degree of freedom, it also allows us to ponder the act of longing (anhelar). It is a constant tension between what enters and what leaves, between that which sustains life and that which puts it at risk: containment and desire. There are territories where breathing has become difficult. Minerals extracted from mountain ranges, plants forced to live in foreign environments, cleared and burned rainforests, silenced human voices, and rivers diverted, poisoned, or dammed form a landscape where breath seems interrupted. As if air itself were denied to the body of the earth. Yet, breath persists. And with it circulates a complex mixture of bodies, materials, moisture, and memories. Every breath contains multiple forms of life, reminding us that nothing occurs in isolation. In Latin America, this condition is particularly visible in the systems connecting seemingly distant territories. From the Amazon, massive volumes of water rise as vapor and travel as atmospheric rivers that feed the Andes; the Andes, in turn, allow it to descend again and sustain life across multiple scales. This cycle creates a form of planetary respiration where rainforest and mountain mutually affect one another, sustaining Latin America. This exhibition is proposed as an approach to that shared breath, its interruptions and continuities, and the tensions between dispossession and persistence, landscape and nature, life and death. It seeks to invite imagination and active listening toward everything breathing around us. Even in the absence of air, clarity, space, or understanding, breath does not stop; ultimately, every living being on the planet longs for that minimal space to sustain its existence.
