Vicky Newmann

Paisajes Interrumpidos

From the exhibition *Paisajes Interrumpidos* (Interrupted Landscapes), curated by Viviana Mejía.

Vicky Neumann’s work unfolds as a fluctuating collision between the painterly gesture and the urgency of a world in crisis. Her canvases—worked with powerful brushstrokes, cuts, collages, and embroidery—are fields of tension where construction and destruction, the intimate and the collective, and the organic and the political coexist. The artist proposes a form of painting that does not seek harmony but rather acknowledges chaos as a condition of the present.

Neumann works with layers—material, symbolic, and affective—that evoke the tropical rainforest, environmental collapse, the radical transformation of territories, and the contradictions inherent to the human experience. Her pieces invoke the landscape not merely as a natural setting, but as a contested space, a witness to the violence of extraction, and a living archive of buried memories.

These works originate in environmental catastrophe yet are swept into an even darker vortex: mining, structural poverty, and oblivion. This perspective permeates her painting: layers of color and history, irony and rage. Her images become a kind of visual cry—exuberant and overflowing—in which every stroke seems to yearn for both life and destruction.

In this context, painting also becomes a form of testimony. There are fragments of re-stitched fabric, traces of domestic life, and gestures that do not merely create forms but point to connections, emotions, and silences. The artist reconfigures her compositions as if attempting to make visible what often remains hidden amidst the noise of the present: the persistence of life, even amidst the rubble. As she puts it: “No matter how low we fall, there is almost always something that can be done.”

Thus, Vicky Neumann invites us to pause and observe the fissures, the threads that hold fast, and the brushstroke that simultaneously denounces and embraces. Her work is not merely an aesthetic act; it is also an ethical stance in the face of collapse—painting as a space to imagine, remember, and, perhaps, begin again.
