Incautación

The installation consists of two parts. One is an image created using the impression left by a dot-matrix printer on blue carbon paper, revealing two soldiers standing guard after capturing several Amazonian shamans. The other part comprises a series of wrappings—lined with carbon paper—resembling those used to transport narcotics.

The image alludes to modern mechanisms of capture, ranging from the camera—as a device for capturing images—to the soldiers representing the nation-state. The carbon-paper-lined wrappings—a method still employed today because the material can thwart X-ray detection—evoke a scene of seizure.

Ultimately, these two elements create a scene reminiscent of those found in newspapers and news broadcasts, where the iconic nature of the record repeats daily like an eternal return of the same. It is an image of modernity that captures, erases, and seizes in order to preserve its apparent legitimacy.
