When the world seems afraid to peek into the future, art decides to take a look. For a long time, this was called science fiction, and it has been the primary engine of science proper.  However, for our Latin American realities—positioned along the technological margins of our era—there is a need to step into those realities without degrading what remains, preserving habitats and modes of thought crucial to keeping the world from dissolving into impending collapse.  The proposals gathered here give shape to their own futures, some strongly rooted in describing our volatile present. Dystopias of yesterday and today, or expectant glances at what is to come, constitute an exercise of imagination (rather than fantasy or nostalgia) asserting that art is closer to knowledge production than to the reinforcement of superstition.
